There are many signs that can show you your dwelling might have paranormal energy or presence in it.  I am not one to tell you to simply dismiss your instincts here.  Intuition is something I feel I can trust, so I have no reason to think others are not intuitive.  The thing about feelings though, is that they will not give proof that your house, or establishment, is haunted.

Things to look for to see if you are haunted:

You see lights come on or go off when you know there is no one there.  You see lights flicker, or seem to dance, or float, or move in an erratic manner.  Remember that light is energy, and spirit beings, or ghosts, crave energy to manifest or communicate.

You hear sounds that are foreign to you.  Not the sounds of a creaking house, or man made sounds.  A voice that you don't recognize,  or a voice when no one is there.  When you ask it to speak again, and it does.   For those not trained in paranormal investigation, this type of response could be very startling, or even frightening.  Try to remember people are people, even after their death, and the thing they want most to do, maybe the ONLY thing they want to do, is communicate.  As unsettling as this may be to you, if you are respectful, and can overcome the initial fear, you may be able to hear much clearer.  But by all means, if you cannot overcome your fear, do not try communicating.  The purpose is for you to see if you are haunted, and if you are, to arrive at a solution you can peacefully live with.

You hear footsteps when no one is there.  You hear a door close, and no door had movement around you.  You see an appliance or stationary object in your house appear to act on its own.  A microwave, or a stove, works by itself.  A chair moves on its own.  A window opens.  A bedspread moves when no one is in bed.  Clothes in a closet become rearranged on their own.  You leave your room in a mess in the morning , and when you come home, your room is cleaned up.  OR you leave your room cleaned, and then later you see total disarray of your belongings.  

Animals can be ghosts also.  You may feel something rub against your leg, or hear a bark, or a meow, a growl, or a whimper. 

You see shadows moving, or actually see a shadow figure in full form.  You see a full body apparition.  Although rare, these types of sightings are a definite reason to seek a qualified investigation group.

You feel touched.  Ghosts can grab, hit, kick, trip, choke, any manner of hostile action, if they choose to.  A touch may simply mean that someone wants to communicate, or comfort, or remember what it was like to be close to someone.  Most types of physical contact will not be harmful or malicious in nature.  Just use good judgment, and always seek assistance if you are unsure or frightened.

You hear whistling, or singing, humming.  Ghosts don't always have to talk to communicate.  I have several EVP's that have a ghost whistling, and/or singing to music. 

You find a very cold or a very warm, or hot spot in your house that is not normal.  To verify this you will need scientific measuring equipment. 

You feel a rush of wind, or an abnormal breeze.  Ghosts can manipulate any form of energy available to them.  

Your pets act as if they are playing with an imaginary friend.  Ghost children will usually still like playing with animals.  OR, your children will speak of seeing animals that are not there, or don't appear to be there.

You smell something that should not be there.  Some have stated that at times they smelled the perfume that their grandmother used to wear, even after grandmother had passed years before.  Or you smell the cigar your grandfather used to smoke.  There is a smell of someone cooking in a place where there should be no smell at all, or no appliances to make that kind of smell.  

Overall, ghosts may or may not have enough energy to communicate with you plainly, or clearly.  That is why they draw energy from any available source.  Batteries will completely drain after they were installed new.  Flashlights will simply go out, when you know they are powered.  But if the ghost cannot manipulate the energy very well, they may show themselves as an orb, or flash of light, a small shadow, or a faint sound.  Remember, they WANT to communicate, if they show you any sign of their presence at all.  And by communicating, they also show you that they have, or feel, a need of their own.  Think of being lost yourself.  Do you not want to communicate your need to anyone that will listen?

Ghosts will not speak to everyone.  Just think of yourself, and how you do not want to talk to everyone.  Some people you just have to walk on by, and not say anything, for whatever reason.  Ghosts see people all the time that try to get them to talk.  Don't you think they would get tired of all the investigators bugging them?

Always remember to be respectful.  Speaking from experience, you will find more communication if you try to understand that a ghost is lost, or in pain, or deeply saddened, or remorseful.  Also, remember that some ghosts can seem just as happy as if they did not know they were not alive.  I even have an evp of a ghost cursing, using a very bad word, at a stupid question that was asked of him.  IN THIS LIFE OR THE NEXT, PEOPLE ARE STILL PEOPLE.
